Prayer: Conversations with a Listening God
November 1, 2023 by DC
Have you ever had a conversation with someone who couldn't hear you? Perhaps you've talked to a pet, like my dog Remi, who listens with those soulful eyes but can't hear a word you say. Remi is completely deaf, and it makes no sense trying to talk to her, but I still do it. It's a curious experience. I know she can't hear my words, yet I talk to her anyway, pouring my thoughts and affection into the moment.
In a way, your prayers to God can sometimes feel similar. There may be moments when you wonder if your prayers are like words spoken to a deaf ear or if they're just "hitting the ceiling." You may face times of doubt when you question whether God is truly listening. But, rest assured, He is. The Bible reminds you that God is not only a listening God but also a loving and attentive one:
Psalm 34:17-18 says, "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
God listens to your prayers. He doesn't just hear the words, though; He understands the intentions of your heart. When you pour out your concerns, joys, and sorrows to Him, He draws near to you, especially in your moments of need.
1 John 5:14 says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."
Sometimes, what you ask for isn't what's best for you or in line with God's perfect plan. But even when you don't fully comprehend His will, you can be confident that God hears you. He listens not only to your words but to the deepest desires of your heart.
So, when you find yourself in a moment of doubt when it feels like your prayers are falling on deaf ears or "hitting the ceiling," remember that God is the listening God. He hears you and understands your heart. Keep talking to Him, pour out your thoughts, and know that your words, spoken in faith and love, reach the very heart of God. Your prayers are never in vain, and His love for you is unwavering.
