I have some friends who are parents and they’ve already run themselves ragged trying to get everything together so they can give their kids the “perfect summer.”
Parents, stop putting so much pressure on yourselves, trying to provide the “perfect summer” for your kids.
I know what you’re thinking, “Easier said than done, Haleigh…you don’t have any kids, you don’t know what that pressure feels like.” You’re right, I don’t, but hear me out…right now, you’re looking at everything through the eyes of an adult…not the eyes of a kid.
For example, my family and I were reminiscing about this cabin that my grandparents used to own in an area called “Piney Creek.” My mom was complaining about how the cabin was so old and the A/C didn’t work so it was always hot. The water in the pool nearby felt like water in a hot tub, and it tasted like sweat and smelled like Sulphur; but my brother and I remember having the time of our lives!
First off, to a kid, a pool is a pool, no matter how hot the water is. Yes, it was hot inside the cabin but that meant we could tie a sheet around our necks, stand in front of the fan and pretend to be superheroes. Yes, the cabin was old and creaky but that allowed us to be detectives on a mission to figure out where the creaks were coming from.
So stop trying to plan the “perfect summer.” The truth is, your kids will be able to find the fun in any situation, so RELAX and simply focus on creating the time to spend together as a family; THAT is what your kids will cherish forever.
