Peace On Earth
December 8, 2021 by Billy Ray Burt

Picture this:  Warm images of bountiful feasts on a table, a house lit with brilliant multi-colored lights, snow falling amid children singing and a warm and comforting fireplace with stockings hung from the mantle… all are intended to make us comparatively think of the holiday season.  How many times have you looked at these visuals and thought, “Wow, I would love to have a Christmas like that”?  However, these visuals are not reality; it might be for a very, very few, but for the majority of us, these images are merely an escape – a substitution.  Daily issues with finances, work, family obligations, church commitments, kids, spouse, pets… they still exist.  We find ourselves working so hard to create and find happiness, joy, and peace for one day out of the year.  Once Christmas Day is over, life falls back into place and the “Cheer” eventually subsides.

Now, picture this: A dirt floor, filth, waste, straw, and hay strewn about, farm animals bleating and eating from a wooden trough, a place that is anything but warm and clean. This image is not what comes to mind when we hear or read the words “Holiday Season” or “Christmas”.  Yet, perfect, fully human, fully-GOD, and the Savior of the world, was born in this environment.  How could THE King of Kings enter this world in such a lowly place!  However, at that moment, there was happiness on that dirt floor; there was joy among the animals, and peace where it was cold and dirty. This is the reality of Christmas.  Almost 2,000 years later, happiness, joy, and peace can still be had, but not for only one day, but a lifetime. Because the essence of “happiness”, “joy” and “peace” did die, but He didn’t stay dead; He rose and is alive – Jesus Christ, the giver of true happiness, joy, and peace.  No matter how many substitutions the commercial world may deploy, every single one of them is fleeting and eventually leave; but there is Jesus, what He gives is eternal.

This year, save the hassle of trying to create peace, it already exists – in abundance thru Christ.  Come to Him, trust in Him, remember Him, celebrate and worship Him in all things.  He will show and give you peace in all things.

“Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV)
